Time Management?

Time Management?

Actually, no! You can never really manage time, you can divide your time.

As an IELTS trainer, most of the students ask me how to manage time while we are pursuing reading module, however, I don't think this is the problem of only IELTS aspirants, this is also an issue faced by most of us. Juggling between personal and professional life, seeking a balance between both with failed, same boring attempts.

I am writing this piece today with the pure intention of imparting proper guidance regarding the perspective we have built in our minds, I am not writing to suggest the solution for the mismanagement of time or how well you can manage your time. This article simply aims to open your insights on the time-management concept - a false dichotomy that we have in our little brains.

To understand in detail let's understand what time management means according to its literal meaning, it is 'the process of organizing and planning how to allocate time between tasks and activities.' The meaning itself conveys that it is organizing and planning. We have read many articles on organizing time and planning our schedules. But this isn't management, if you think from its literary meaning which is 'the process of dealing with or controlling things or people.' We are not dealing with or controlling our times as we may never do so. Call it a limitation of being human.

What we understood from this is, that time is not managed but divided. Hence, taking classes on time management, planning, and organizing may never be truly helpful, if you have ever understood the importance of dividing time.

So, how does this concept of clearance help in actually dividing time and planning life in a better way? Does it help us achieve the goal of a perfectly balanced life - a balance between personal and professional life? The answer is quite simple, learning the concept better before actually putting it into use can help you understand its practical applications as we have seen in nature or more accurately physics. Understanding the physical concept of boiling for example may give more insights when you see it practically.

Let me demonstrate it with an example, as I was thinking about the same issues and juggling with time management in my professional and personal life, I experimented with my students, I told my old students to continue reading module the way they were doing to date. However, in my new batch, I taught time to divide time for each section (say 20 mins for each) instead of teaching them the time-management concept (teaching them to go per question a few mins strictly).

I found that my old students still performed the same they would in their previous mocks, nevertheless, the new batch showed significant improvements by not showing any trace of lack of time.
